Hermes-Matthew Probert's Encyclopedia. Image Used With Permission. Hermes was the winged messenger of the gods. He was the god of flocks, road, eloquence, trading, thieves, commerce, and was also associated with fertility. Trade and travel were closely related so he became a god of mercantiles, gambling, profit, hazard, and gaming. He was also the god of athletes and is given credit for inventing boxing and racing. He was also the inventor of the lyre, and was the bringer of good fortune, god of shepards, boundaries, and the guardian of graves. It was his job to lead the souls as he was the only one who could find his way back.
