Tiamat was the great mother goddess and overall goddess of the salt waters. Tiamat was very bothered by the noise of her children and those around her. Apsu tried to persuade Tiamat to slay the younger gods with his help, however she declined until after his death. It is thought that she destroyed all of her children in order to make the world. She rallied a full slew of gods and creatures to be lead under her champion and new lover Qingu. Marduk attacked and defeaed Qingu, causing a direct battle with Tiamat. In the end Marduk won with Tiamat's skull being crushed. Half of her body was used to roof up the sky. Her eyes became the sources of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
