1. Prometheus pinioned to a far off mountain by Might and Violence, agents of the tyrant Zeus. They are accompanied by the sympathetic Hephaestus.

2. Abandoned, Prometheus is approached by the daughters of Ocean.
    a. They grieve with Prometheus over his fate.
    b. He informs them of the basis of his conflict with Zeus.

3. Ocean arrives and urges Prometheus accommodate himself to Zeus' will.
    a. Prometheus recalls the suffering of others at Zeus' hands.
    b. He repeats to Ocean the benefits he has provided mankind.

4. The arrival of Io, a maiden transformed into a heifer: a victim of the lust of Zeus and the revenge of Hera.
    a. Prometheus' prophecy to her regarding Zeus' demise: he is to be succeeded
    by the offspring of a union where the child is greater than the father.
    b. Only Prometheus can prevent this.

5. Hermes, agent of Zeus, arrives and demands that Prometheus disclose what he knows.
    a. Prometheus refuses

6. Earthquake and punishment of Prometheus.
